Mobile Suit Gundam, or more simply Gundam, is a Japanese animation franchise created by Yoshiyuki Tomino and Hajime Yatate for the Sunrise studio in 1979. Belonging to the Mecha genre, it presents various classic elements of science fiction - space wars, universe scientifically advanced - but innovates by its will of realism, as well through the narration as through the technological elements. The giant robots, essence of the mecha genre, are therefore for the first time reduced to the rank of simple mass weapons in Japan. This innovative idea, which then reflects the opening of the traditional audience of animated series to adults, gives birth to a sub-genre of Japanese science fiction called "real robot".
After a difficult start, Gundam was successful in the early 1980s and will not leave it until today; Thus, about thirty series, OVA and films are made for the franchise, as well as dozens of mangas, novels, video games and even parodies via SD Gundam. If audio-visual productions are at the heart of the saga, Gundam is in fact based on the second pillar represented by derivative products, including models of robots (named Gunpla). Economically speaking, the franchise is the most profitable license of the multinational Namco Bandai, generating today about 50 billion yen annually. Most critics focus on this perception of economic demand that takes precedence over creativity.
But success is above all cultural: practically unknown in the Francophonie, Gundam is nevertheless a profound phenomenon of society in Japan. Most academic scholars of the subject clearly define its impact as a major issue on Japanese animation and popular culture, regularly comparing the franchise with Star Wars in the West. This manifests itself in a tangible presence in the daily life of the archipelago, whether through advertisements, shops, art exhibitions or the construction of an eighteen-meter statue near Tokyo. However, we can not speak of hegemony to the extent that the saga has exported little and has often been competing with series like Macross or Evangelion.
